Philip Baruth has represented the Chittenden-Central District in the Vermont Senate since 2011 and currently serves as President Pro Tempore, a role he assumed in January 2023. He previously served as Senate Majority Leader from 2013 to 2017 and has sat on the Appropriations, Judiciary, Education, Economic Development, and Agriculture Committees. A professor of English at the University of Vermont since 1993, Baruth is also a novelist whose work has been recognized by the New York Times and Washington Post, and his tenure in the Senate has been notably marked by his advocacy for gun control measures, including an assault weapons ban he first proposed in 2013.
