Your Voice Matters

Vermont has the most accessible government in the country. With a citizen legislature of 180 part-time lawmakers serving 650,000 residents, your state representative likely lives in your town and reads their own email. Contacting them is simpler than you think.

Step 1: Find Your Representatives

Look up your state rep, senator, and local selectboard members by town.

Frequently Asked Questions

Vermont's citizen legislature means most representatives hold regular jobs outside the State House. They read constituent emails β€” especially during session. Personal, specific messages from constituents in their district get the most attention. Form letters and out-of-district messages carry less weight.

Search for your town on the officials directory. Your town page shows which House and Senate districts you belong to, along with the names and contact information of your representatives.

During legislative session (January–May), expect 3–7 days for a response. Outside of session, response times vary. If you haven't heard back after a week, a brief follow-up email is appropriate. If it's urgent, call their listed phone number.

For state-level issues, contact both your House rep and your Senator. For local issues (roads, zoning, town services), start with your selectboard. For issues that cross boundaries (education funding, property taxes), contact both state and local officials. Tailor each message slightly β€” don't just copy-paste.
