About Granby
Just 81 people live in Granby, making it one of the least populated municipalities in Vermont. Located in Essex County — the state's most remote and sparsely settled region — Granby was chartered in 1761 but never attracted significant settlement. The terrain is heavily forested, the winters are long, and the nearest services are miles away in neighboring towns.
Granby has no paved roads maintained by the town, no school, and no commercial establishments. The community exists as a handful of households in the deep woods of Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. Despite this, the town has persisted for over 260 years, a quiet testament to the determination of the people who choose to live here.
Even with its minimal population, Granby maintains a functioning town government with a selectboard and holds annual town meeting. The gathering may be small enough to fit around a single table, but the democratic process is the same as in Burlington or Montpelier.
