About Landgrove

With a population of just 177, Landgrove is one of the smallest towns in Bennington County and in all of Vermont. Chartered in 1780, the town sits in a narrow mountain valley surrounded by the Green Mountain National Forest. The terrain is steep and heavily wooded, and the town's small size reflects the limited amount of arable land available to early settlers.

Landgrove's character today is shaped by its natural setting. The town is surrounded by hiking trails, including portions of the Catamount Trail for cross-country skiing. Many of the homes are seasonal or vacation properties, giving the community a shifting population that peaks during foliage season and winter recreation months. There is no commercial center — the nearest services are in neighboring Londonderry or Peru.

Despite its tiny size, Landgrove maintains a full town government with a selectboard and annual meeting. The tradition of self-governance persists here as it does across Vermont, a reminder that democratic participation is not a function of population but of community commitment.
