About Lemington

Lemington, with a population of just 87, is one of the most remote and sparsely populated towns in Vermont. Located in the northeastern corner of Essex County along the Connecticut River, the town was chartered in 1762 but has never attracted significant settlement. The surrounding terrain is heavily forested, and the community exists as a scattering of homes along a few roads in one of the wildest parts of the state.

The Connecticut River forms Lemington's eastern border, and the town looks across the water to Colebrook, New Hampshire. Logging has historically been the primary economic activity, and the forests that cover most of the town's acreage remain a working landscape. The Nulhegan Basin, part of the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge, lies nearby, preserving one of the most significant wildlife habitats in the Northeast.

Lemington maintains a selectboard and holds annual town meeting despite its minimal population. The town's persistence as a functioning municipality for over 260 years, with fewer than 100 residents, speaks to the durability of Vermont's system of local self-governance.
