About Londonderry

Chartered in 1780, Londonderry sits at the confluence of the West River and the Winhall River in Windham County. The town has two distinct centers — South Londonderry, along the West River, and Londonderry village, slightly to the north. The area's history is tied to both agriculture and the timber industry, with the rivers providing power for sawmills and gristmills throughout the nineteenth century.

Londonderry today has about 1,775 residents and serves as a gateway to the ski areas of southern Vermont, including Magic Mountain and Bromley Mountain. The town's proximity to these resorts has brought seasonal visitors and second-home owners, adding an economic dimension that complements the traditional farming and forestry base. The Flood Brook School serves local students, and the town maintains a small but functional commercial center.

Town meeting and the selectboard govern Londonderry's affairs. The community must navigate the common Vermont tension between year-round residents and seasonal property owners, making civic engagement at town meeting all the more important for shaping the town's direction.
