About Lyndon
Chartered in 1780, Lyndon has grown into the commercial and educational center of Caledonia County, with a population approaching 6,000 that makes it the largest town in the Northeast Kingdom. The village of Lyndonville, laid out in 1866 when the railroad arrived, became the town's economic hub and remains so today. The Passumpsic River flows through the center of town, and its three covered bridges are among the most photographed in the region.
Lyndon is home to Northern Vermont University — Lyndon (formerly Lyndon State College), known particularly for its meteorology and atmospheric sciences program. The campus has been a fixture of the community since 1911. Lyndonville's Main Street retains a working downtown with local businesses, restaurants, and essential services. Nearby Burke Mountain and the Kingdom Trails network have made the area a destination for mountain biking and skiing.
Governance follows the selectboard and town meeting model. As the de facto capital of the Northeast Kingdom, Lyndon's civic decisions have implications beyond its borders, and the town's annual meeting draws engaged participation from residents who understand the community's regional significance.
