About Newport
Perched on the southern shore of Lake Memphremagog, Newport is the commercial center of Orleans County and the unofficial capital of the Northeast Kingdom. The city was incorporated in 1917, splitting from Newport Town, and its downtown slopes toward the waterfront where the lake stretches north into Quebec.
Newport's history is inseparable from the lake and the railroad. The city grew as a rail hub in the late 1800s, connecting Boston-bound freight and passengers with the Canadian lines. The waterfront has been revitalized in recent decades, with a boardwalk, marina, and the Gateway Center drawing visitors. With a population of about 4,620, Newport supports the hospitals, courts, and retail that serve the surrounding rural communities.
The city operates under a city manager and city council form of government. As the region's economic anchor, Newport's civic decisions ripple outward into the smaller towns that depend on its services, making local governance here a matter of regional significance.
