About Pittsford
One of the first towns chartered on the western side of the Green Mountains, Pittsford received its grant in 1761 and was settled by 1769. The town sits along Otter Creek in Rutland County, and its fertile valley floor supported prosperous farms from the beginning. The New England Marble Company quarried stone here, and Pittsford marble found its way into buildings across the state.
With roughly 3,280 residents, Pittsford is a mid-sized Rutland County town that has maintained a genuine village center. The town hall, library, and a cluster of shops line the main road through the village. The New England Power Company dam on Otter Creek and the surrounding recreation area provide fishing and kayaking opportunities.
Pittsford operates through a selectboard and town meeting. The town has been consistently well-managed, with a strong tradition of volunteerism in the fire department, conservation commission, and planning board — the kind of civic infrastructure that keeps a Vermont town functioning.
