About Tinmouth

Chartered in 1761, Tinmouth sits in a quiet valley in Rutland County between the Taconic Range and the main ridge of the Green Mountains. The town was settled in the 1770s by families who found the narrow valley suitable for farming, though the surrounding hills limited the amount of workable land. Tinmouth Pond, a spring-fed body of water in the southern part of town, has been a local landmark for generations.

With a population of about 606, Tinmouth has the feel of a place that time has treated gently. There is no village center in any commercial sense — the town is a scattering of homes and farms along the valley roads. The Tinmouth Channel, a unique wetland area, provides important wildlife habitat. Town meeting in March is the main civic event of the year, where residents gather to handle the business of self-governance with the directness that comes from knowing everyone in the room.
