About Walden

Chartered in 1781, Walden is a Caledonia County town situated on the high ground between the Lamoille and Passumpsic river valleys. The town was settled by families who farmed the rolling uplands, and for most of its history Walden has been a quiet agricultural community. Coles Pond and Lyons Pond provide recreation and scenic value in the northern part of town.

With a population of about 779, Walden today is a place of small farms, forests, and dirt roads winding through the hills. The town sits in the heart of the Northeast Kingdom, and its character reflects that region's independent spirit. There is no commercial center — residents travel to Hardwick or St. Johnsbury for most services. Town meeting each March is the annual gathering where Walden's residents come together to set the budget, elect officers, and tend to the business of self-governance.
