About Waterford

Chartered in 1780, Waterford sits in Caledonia County just east of St. Johnsbury, stretching to the Connecticut River along the New Hampshire border. The town includes the village of Lower Waterford, one of the most picturesque small settlements in the Northeast Kingdom, with its white church and handful of buildings set against a backdrop of river and mountains.

Waterford's population of about 1,114 is spread across a landscape of farms, forests, and the river valley. The town's proximity to St. Johnsbury provides access to services while maintaining a distinctly rural character. Moore Reservoir, formed by the dam on the Connecticut River, extends along the town's eastern border. The selectboard governs local affairs, and residents gather for town meeting each March — the annual tradition of direct democracy that gives every voter a say in the budget and the direction of this quiet river-border community.
