About Wheelock

Chartered in 1785, Wheelock is a Caledonia County town named for Eleazar Wheelock, the founder of Dartmouth College. The town occupies hilly terrain south of Sheffield and east of Hardwick, with a landscape of small farms, forests, and ponds. Wheelock was settled by families from southern New England who worked the upland soil and endured winters that tested their resolve.

With a population of about 591, Wheelock is a quintessential Northeast Kingdom hill town — quiet, remote, and self-reliant. The town has no commercial center, and residents look to Lyndonville or Hardwick for services. The surrounding landscape, with its mix of open fields and northern hardwood forest, is the kind of Vermont countryside that has changed relatively little over the past century. Town meeting each March is the civic anchor, where residents gather to manage the budget and make decisions together.
