About Winhall

Chartered in 1761, Winhall is a Bennington County town in the Green Mountains whose identity has been shaped by the ski industry. Stratton Mountain Resort lies partly within Winhall's borders, and the influx of seasonal residents and visitors has given the town an economic profile quite different from its neighbors. The year-round population of about 669 multiplies many times over during ski season.

Before the resort era, Winhall was a small farming and logging community, and the remnants of that earlier identity persist in the back roads and older homesteads away from the resort development. The Winhall River flows through town, and the Green Mountain National Forest covers much of the surrounding terrain. Town governance operates through a selectboard, and the annual town meeting in March is where year-round residents exercise their voice in the decisions about budgets, roads, and the future of a community navigating the complexities of resort-town life.
