About Corinth
Chartered in 1764 and first settled around 1770, Corinth spreads across hilly terrain in Orange County between the Connecticut River valley and the spine of central Vermont. The town once contained a remarkable number of distinct villages — East Corinth, West Corinth, Corinth Corners, Cookeville, Goose Green, and others — each with its own small cluster of houses, a church or schoolhouse, and sometimes a mill. This scattered settlement pattern tells you something about the landscape: narrow valleys separated by ridges, each developing its own little center of gravity.
About 1,380 people live in Corinth today. The town is largely residential and agricultural, with a character shaped by dirt roads, sugar maples, and a strong sense of independence. East Corinth's village center, with its white church and general store, is one of the most classically Vermont scenes in the state. Corinth governs itself through a selectboard and holds its annual Town Meeting each March, where voters gather to set budgets, debate school spending, and handle the practical business of self-government.
