About Greensboro
Caspian Lake has defined Greensboro for as long as anyone can remember. This clear, spring-fed lake in Orleans County has drawn summer visitors since the late 1800s, and the lakeside community became a favorite retreat for writers, academics, and intellectuals. The list of notable summer residents over the years reads like a catalog of mid-twentieth-century American letters.
Greensboro was chartered in 1781 and has a year-round population of about 840. The village center includes Willey's Store, a general store that has served the community for over a century, and the Greensboro Free Library. The town sits in the heart of the Northeast Kingdom, a region known for its rural character, working farms, and independent spirit.
The Greensboro town meeting each March is a well-attended affair. In a town where summer people and year-round residents have coexisted for generations, the annual gathering serves not just as governance but as a reaffirmation of the community's identity — rooted in the land, shaped by the lake, and committed to democratic self-rule.
