About Shoreham

Chartered in 1761, Shoreham is the westernmost town in Addison County, its border defined by Lake Champlain. The Ticonderoga ferry — one of the oldest ferry crossings in North America — connects Shoreham to Fort Ticonderoga in New York, a route that has been in use since the colonial era. In May 1775, Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys crossed these waters to capture the fort from the British, a moment that echoes through American history.

Shoreham's landscape is defined by apple orchards, dairy farms, and the broad, flat terrain along the lake. The town's population of roughly 1,124 reflects a community deeply rooted in agriculture — the orchards here produce a significant share of Vermont's apple crop. Town government operates through a selectboard, and residents gather for town meeting each year to handle the practical business of roads, school funding, and the other decisions that keep a small agricultural town running.
