About Waterville
Chartered in 1824, Waterville is a small town in Lamoille County tucked between the peaks of the northern Green Mountains. The town sits along the North Branch of the Lamoille River, and its narrow valley was settled by families who farmed the limited bottomland and logged the surrounding slopes. Waterville was one of the later towns to be chartered in Vermont, reflecting the difficulty of the terrain.
With a population of about 621, Waterville remains a quiet, rural community. The town sits along Route 109, which connects it to Belvidere to the northeast and Cambridge to the southwest. The surrounding mountains offer backcountry recreation, and the Long Trail passes through the higher elevations nearby. Town meeting each March is the central civic event, where residents gather to manage budgets and make the decisions that sustain self-governance in this small mountain community.
