About Whiting

Chartered in 1763, Whiting is a small Addison County town situated on the flat terrain between Otter Creek and the foothills of the Taconic Range. The town's agricultural character was established early — the rich, level farmland proved ideal for dairy operations, and farming remains visible across the landscape today.

With a population of about 456, Whiting is a place defined more by open fields and quiet roads than by any village center. The town has no commercial establishments and relies on Brandon and Middlebury for services. The flat terrain and proximity to the Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area make the area notable for birding, particularly during seasonal migrations. Town meeting in March is where Whiting's residents gather to make the budget decisions and elect the officers who keep this small agricultural community governing itself.
