About Georgia
Chartered in 1763, Georgia sits on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain in Franklin County, just north of Milton. The town was originally part of the Wentworth Grants issued by New Hampshire's colonial governor, and its lakefront position made it attractive to early settlers. Georgia's shoreline along the Lamoille River delta and the lake itself provided access to trade routes and fishing grounds that sustained the community in its earliest years.
Georgia has grown significantly in recent decades, with a population now approaching 4,800. The town's proximity to both St. Albans and the Burlington metropolitan area has made it appealing to commuters, and new residential development has changed the character of what was once a predominantly farming community. Despite this growth, dairy operations and open fields still mark much of the landscape.
The town governs itself through a selectboard and annual town meeting. As Georgia continues to grow, the tension between preserving agricultural heritage and accommodating development has become a recurring theme in local governance — the kind of question that plays out each March when residents gather to vote.
