About Granville

Granville occupies a narrow valley along the White River in the southwestern corner of Addison County, squeezed between the ridges of the Green Mountains. Chartered in 1781, the town was settled by families who found that the steep terrain limited farming but provided excellent timber and waterpower. Granville Gulf, a dramatic mountain pass on Route 100, features Moss Glen Falls — one of the most photographed waterfalls in Vermont.

With about 300 residents, Granville is a small community that has remained relatively unchanged over the past century. The town's economy was once tied to logging and sawmills, but today most residents commute to neighboring towns for work. The landscape is heavily forested, and the town sits within or adjacent to portions of the Green Mountain National Forest.

Granville is governed by a selectboard with decisions made at annual town meeting. In a community this small, local governance is an intimate affair — neighbors debating budgets and priorities face to face, continuing a tradition of self-governance that dates to the town's founding.
