About Hyde Park

As the shire town of Lamoille County, Hyde Park has served as the center of county governance since 1837. The town was chartered in 1781 and named for Captain Jedediah Hyde Jr., who led the first group of settlers into the area. The Lamoille County Courthouse, a solid brick building in the village center, anchors a Main Street that includes the town offices, a library, and several historic buildings.

Hyde Park's population is just under 3,000. The town sits along the Lamoille River and Green River, and the surrounding landscape mixes farmland with forested hills. The village has a walkable center — unusual for Vermont towns this size — and serves as a service hub for the surrounding rural communities. The Opera House, built in 1910, has been restored and hosts community events and performances.

Local governance operates through a selectboard and annual town meeting. As the county seat, Hyde Park carries civic responsibilities beyond its own borders, and the town's residents take their role in Lamoille County's governance seriously.
