About Hartland
Chartered in 1761, Hartland occupies a stretch of rolling terrain in Windsor County between the Connecticut River and the Green Mountain foothills. The town was one of the early settlements in the upper Connecticut River valley, and its village center retains much of its historic character with well-preserved Federal and Greek Revival homes lining the main street.
Hartland is home to about 3,200 residents. The town includes the villages of Hartland Four Corners, Hartland Three Corners, and North Hartland, where a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flood-control dam on the Ottauquechee River created North Hartland Lake in 1961. The reservoir and its surrounding recreation area offer swimming, boating, and picnicking. Hartland's economy is a mix of agriculture, small business, and commuters who work in the Hartford-Lebanon area.
Governance follows the traditional selectboard and town meeting format. Hartland voters gather each March to exercise the same direct democracy that residents have practiced here since the town's earliest days.
