About Highgate

Pressed against the Canadian border in Franklin County, Highgate was chartered in 1763 and has always been shaped by its position at the edge of the nation. During the War of 1812, smuggling across the border was rampant, and Highgate's residents were not shy about participating. The town encompasses Highgate Springs, Highgate Center, and Highgate Falls, each with its own distinct character.

With a population of about 3,750, Highgate is a sizable community by Franklin County standards. Missisquoi Bay, the shallow northern arm of Lake Champlain, borders the town to the west, providing fishing, waterfowl habitat, and scenic beauty. The Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge, one of the most important wetland habitats in the state, lies partially within Highgate's boundaries. Dairy farming continues to be a major part of the local economy.

Highgate governs itself through a selectboard and annual town meeting. The town's border location gives it a slightly different perspective on Vermont civic life — residents here are accustomed to thinking about their community in both a local and an international context.
