About Hinesburg
Chartered in 1762, Hinesburg lies in the Champlain Valley along the western flank of the Green Mountains in Chittenden County. The town was named for Abel Hines, one of the original grantees, and grew steadily as a farming community through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The LaPlatte River runs through the town center and once powered several mills.
Hinesburg has grown significantly in recent decades, with a population now exceeding 4,400. Its location between Burlington and the rural communities to the south has made it attractive to families and commuters. The town has worked to manage this growth carefully, maintaining a compact village center with a general store, town hall, and schools while preserving the surrounding agricultural landscape. The Hinesburg Community Resource Center and the town's active recreation programs reflect a community that takes quality of life seriously.
Town meeting remains Hinesburg's primary governing institution. The annual gathering is well-attended, reflecting a community that values both its democratic traditions and the practical work of local governance.
