About Pomfret

Spread across the hills east of Woodstock in Windsor County, Pomfret encompasses several small villages — South Pomfret, North Pomfret, Hewletts, and Pomfret itself — each with its own character but none large enough to dominate the town. The Suicide Six ski area, one of the oldest in Vermont, operates within town boundaries and has been running since 1934.

Chartered in 1761, Pomfret was an agricultural community from the start, its hillside farms producing wool, dairy, and maple syrup. Today the town's roughly 930 residents include working farmers alongside professionals who commute to Woodstock, White River Junction, or Hanover. The South Pomfret village, with its covered bridge and general store, is a frequent stop for tourists exploring the Upper Valley.

Pomfret's town meeting is held each March, and the town operates with a selectboard. The blend of old farming families and newer arrivals creates a civic dynamic that is typical of Windsor County — respectful of tradition, open to change, and committed to the principle that local decisions should be made locally.
