About Troy

Chartered in 1801, Troy sits near the Canadian border in Orleans County where the Missisquoi River begins its journey westward. The town includes the villages of Troy and North Troy, with the latter sitting just a mile or so from the Quebec line. For much of the nineteenth century, the border location made Troy a center for cross-border trade — and, during Prohibition, for somewhat less official commerce as well.

Troy's population of about 1,613 reflects a community tied to the land and the rhythms of northern Vermont. Dairy farming has been a mainstay, and the broad valley of the Missisquoi provides good agricultural ground. Jay Peak ski resort, just to the east, brings economic activity to the region. The town operates under a selectboard form of government, and residents gather for town meeting each March to set budgets and make the decisions that shape daily life in this border community.
