About Underhill

Chartered in 1763, Underhill lies at the western base of Mount Mansfield in Chittenden County. The town provides one of the primary access points to Vermont's highest peak — the Sunset Ridge Trail, starting from Underhill State Park, offers one of the most dramatic alpine hikes in the state, with open ledges and sweeping views. The Civilian Conservation Corps built much of the park's infrastructure in the 1930s.

Underhill's population of about 3,016 reflects steady growth driven by its location within commuting distance of Burlington. The town maintains two distinct centers: Underhill Center and Underhill Flats, each with its own character. Despite the development pressure, the community has worked to preserve its agricultural land and rural feel. The selectboard governs, and town meeting in March remains the annual event where residents come together to set budgets, debate priorities, and participate in the direct democracy that Vermont towns have practiced since the eighteenth century.
