About Milton
Sprawling across the northern reaches of Chittenden County, Milton has grown from a farming community into one of the Burlington area's most populated suburbs. The town was chartered in 1763, and its early economy centered on agriculture and the lumber mills along the Lamoille River, which cuts through town on its way to Lake Champlain.
With over 11,000 residents, Milton is one of the largest towns in the state by population. Sand Bar State Park, on the causeway connecting Milton to South Hero, is one of the most popular swimming beaches in the Champlain Valley. The Catamount outdoor recreation area and extensive trail networks give residents access to the landscape that first drew settlers here.
Milton's growth has brought the challenges common to fast-growing Vermont towns: balancing residential development with agricultural preservation, managing traffic, and maintaining the infrastructure that a population of this size demands. The town operates with a selectboard and town manager, and civic participation remains strong — budget debates and zoning discussions routinely draw crowds to town meeting.
