About Sharon
Born in Sharon on December 23, 1805, Joseph Smith — founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — spent his earliest years here before his family moved to New York. A large granite monument marks the birthplace site on Dairy Hill Road. The town itself was chartered in 1761 and sits in Windsor County along the White River, where the river valley provided fertile ground for the farming families who settled here in the late eighteenth century.
Sharon's population of about 1,386 reflects a community balanced between agricultural tradition and the commuter realities of modern Vermont. Interstate 89 passes through town, connecting residents to the Upper Valley and beyond. The Sharon Academy, a small independent school, has been part of the local educational landscape. Each March, residents convene for town meeting to vote on budgets and elect officers — a practice that has continued unbroken since the town's founding era.
