About Hartford
Five villages — White River Junction, Wilder, Hartford Village, West Hartford, and Quechee — make up the town of Hartford, the most populous community in Windsor County with nearly 10,000 residents. Chartered in 1761, Hartford's location at the confluence of the White and Connecticut Rivers made it a natural transportation hub. When the railroads arrived in the mid-1800s, White River Junction became one of the most important rail junctions in New England, with five lines converging in the village.
The railroad's decline in the twentieth century hit White River Junction hard, but the village has experienced a cultural revival in recent decades. The former Hotel Coolidge, one of the last grand railroad hotels still operating in Vermont, anchors a downtown that now includes galleries, restaurants, and the Center for Cartoon Studies. Quechee, at the opposite end of town, draws visitors to Quechee Gorge — Vermont's deepest gorge at 165 feet.
Hartford operates under a town manager and selectboard system. With its five distinct villages, the town's governance must balance the interests of diverse communities — from the urban core of White River Junction to the rural character of West Hartford — making town meeting a particularly dynamic affair.
